Dumping 3DS Game Cartridges
To complete this process, a 3DS console is necessary—it cannot be done solely on a PC.
Important Note: When you dump a game cartridge, DLC and updates are not included. These files are stored separately on the SD card. For guidance on extracting updates and DLCs, refer to the relevant section.
Using GodMode9 for Game Cartridge Dumping
With the introduction of sighax and boot9strap, GodMode9 is the preferred method for backing up game cartridges.
What You Need:
- The latest version of GodMode9
- A 3DS system running boot9strap
- An SD card with at least 8GB of free space (larger is recommended)
- An SD card reader (preferred) or a method for wireless file transfer
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Set Up GodMode9
- Follow the official quick start guide for installation. Using boot9strap is recommended.
- Insert the SD Card
- Place the SD card into your 3DS console.
- Launch GodMode9
- Power on your device while holding (START) to boot into GodMode9.
- Navigate to the Game Cartridge
- On the GodMode9 root menu, locate and select [C:] GAMECART using the D-Pad and press (A).
- Select the File to Dump
- Choose the file labeled [TitleID]_[version].trim.3ds.
- Open NCSD image options… and select Decrypt file (0:/gm9/out).
- Complete the Dumping Process
- Once the process is finished, press (A) to continue.
- Hold (R) + (START) to turn off the 3DS.
- Transfer the Dumped File to Your PC
- Remove the SD card from your 3DS and insert it into your computer.
- Copy the .3ds file from /gm9/out/ to a folder on your PC.
- Load the Game in Citra
- Open Citra and either:
- Click File > Load File to open the game directly.
- Add a game directory by selecting the + icon or Add New Game Directory in the main window.
